Mayday, Kate

Lyrics

autopilot disconnect
its night over the water
all I can see is rain slide across the windscreen
as a red light glows on your face

I looked at the sky and saw impact

fuck....

you looked at the dash
and found us a way back up

F L three five zero
black atlantic under
cabin full of breathing, plastic cups, bad films
left screen flickered
right side argued numbers
autothrust dropped an lost faith from the wings

master warning lit the flight deck crimson
stick shook hard, and the nose wont gain
I heard the future getting forensic with us
green dot aviation saying both our names

as people
as sequence
as failures
not weather
our workload
fatigue or doubt
as one more flight where confirmation bias got fatal
one wrong call
and the sea reaches out

I felt the aircraft quit being air trapped
felt three hundred lives lean through our hands
love wants violins
life wants the checklist
you had open before I could even understand

you didnt say trust me
you said say the pitch
you said read the thrust
you said stay with this

Mayday, Kate
Im losing the rate
Mayday, Kate
Im losing the rate
I see the water
you see the way
I saw the ending
you say my name

Mayday, Kate
Im losing the rate
Mayday, Kate
Im losing the rate
the captain shouldnt brake when the flight level changed
hundreds lived
cos you stayed brave

you said my aircraft
I said your aircraft
that was the first honest thing Id done
you killed the sensor noise with lovecraft
perfect pitch, power, memory items begun

drama, speech, nope
just scans and crosschecks
no bullshit polished for passengers later
unreliable speed and altitude suspect
but your eyes stayed locked on the real behaviour

you caught my tunnel vision before it went terminal
cut through the clatter, the pull ups, the rain
said dont break the needle
set the known vertical
hold on to me till we can rest this plane

mentour pilot moments in the back of my mind
some future breakdown of why we fell
but you broke the chain and put us back on course
and turned a deadly hurdle back into a tale we could tell

I thought I saw the sea rehearsing our endings
I thought this was our final day

you saw airflow, attitude and engine settings
and talked the jets into staying awake

Mayday, Kate
Im losing the rate
Mayday, Kate
Im losing the rate
I see the water
you see the way
I saw the ending
you say my name

Mayday, Kate
Im losing the rate
Mayday, Kate
Im losing the rate
the captain shouldnt brake when the flight level changed
hundreds lived
cos you stayed brave

stabilised
standby
Ive got you
youve got us
